e-News - June 9, 2010
Pastors: Jim Whedbee,
Don Hanshew, Melissa Smith
Pastor's Message
With June comes all of the wonderful activity of mission trips and inspiring testimonies, special fellowship fun, and great ways to meet new people in the church. Just reading through all of this e-news will make you want to jump up and get involved! Who doesn't like a pool party (this Thursday, and all are invited) and want to hear about what some youth are calling "The best choir tour ever!" (this Sunday in all worship services).
If you have been out in your neighborhood and met people new to your community, invite them to come and experience the wonderful joy of what it is to be connected to Fountain City United Methodist Church. They will thank you later.
Looking forward to seeing you this Sunday!
-- Don

Holston Annual Conference Mission Offering
Holston's partnership with East Africa Annual Conference and the United Methodist Church in southern Sudan continues to provide resources and mission teams to address the needs identified on the Covenant Agreement. The generosity of Holston has provided educational facilities, medical assistance, pastor training, leadership in the church through Boo and Phyllis Hankins, leadership education, and clean water. Equally important are the renewed hopes of our brothers and sisters in southern Sudan for a future of peace ... a peace born out of love and a faith in God. This Sunday, we will take a special missions offering for Sudan to support Holston's ongoing ministry in Sudan.

Interfaith Hospitality Network
Our church will be Host to Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) the week of June 27 - July 4. We are delighted to announce that we have another support church, Crossroads Presbyterian in Halls, that will be helping us starting this month. St. Thomas Episcopal is also a support church for our program. We need a few more volunteers that could help with the children and, also, with staying overnight. Please call if you are interested. We appreciate all the support you give to help make a difference in the lives of our guests.
Thank you,
Susan Schumpert and Woody Farrell
Coordinators

Project Serve
Are you looking for a way to get involved in a hands-on project to help our church, community, and neighbors? Now is your chance! Be looking for Project Serve opportunities this summer. Our first service project will be June 30. Gather at 6:00 p.m. in the back parking lot and we will split up into groups for various service projects (be on the lookout for project details). All projects will take place in or near the church building. There will be at least one family friendly project where children are welcome to serve with their parents. Please contact Kelley Flatford, 660-5868, kflatford@gmail.com for more information.

For the Entire Church Family

Loading the Hanshew Moving Truck Party: June 19
Okay, it will be more about loading the truck than a party but you are invited to help load boxes into the moving truck for the Hanshews on June 19 from 9:00 a.m. till it's done. Lots of laughs will abound. If you can help please email Don at dhanshew@fountaincityumc.org.

Annual Conference June 13-16
United Methodists of the Holston Conference will gather at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, next week for the annual session of business and worship. Please remember the Conference in your prayers. Of course, the highlight of the week will be the ordination of Melissa Smith. This service of worship will take place on Sunday, June 13, at 7:00 p.m. You are invited to take the 1-1/2 hour trip over for any part of the week, but especially for the ordination service. We are so grateful for her journey to this important time and pray God's blessings upon her.

Pastoral Transition Ahead
This Sunday, June 13, will be Don Hanshew's last Sunday in the traditional services before the Hanshews' move on June 23 to Weber City, Virginia. Daniel Ogle and his wife, Erin, will move into the parsonage on June 23; and their first Sunday with us will be on June 27. Please be in prayer for both these families.

Melton Scholarship
The Dr. Sonny Melton Scholarship was established to honor Dr. Melton for his many years of service in church and public school music. This scholarship is awarded yearly to someone who has participated in the church music program and who plans a career in education. Applicants should submit a letter of application with resume to the church office by June 30.

God is doing great things at Holston Conference's new church near Philadelphia, TN. The Spanish-speaking congregation is led by Dani and Kacye Castillo. Kacye grew up here at Fountain City, and is the daughter of Rocky and Kathy Castenir. We are pleased that they can be with us to talk about their ministry at Casa de Alfarero, The Potter's House.
