After a short summer break, The Knitters will start clicking their needles again on Monday, September 13, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Room 137 at the church.
We will discuss one or more projects and a local charity to donate them to at our first meeting. If you knit, crochet, or do any kind of needle work please come join us in this endeavor. (We will have plenty of “professional” help for most kinds of fiber work.) In the past we knitted hats for those less fortunate and lap blankets for our shut-ins, but this year we may want to do something different. If you can’t join us at the church, you can work on a project in the comfort of your home – just bring your finished pieces to us by the end of November. Feel free to bring a bag lunch.
Please call Patti Ball at 925-4499 for more information.

Every year, the church has a Certified Public Account (CPA) firm review the financial records of the church for the previous calendar year. For the past several years, we have been under contract with Mitchell, Emert & Hill, P.C. (MEH) as our independent financial auditor. The working relationship between the church support (business) staff and our auditors has grown to one of support, sharing and partnering. The 2008 financial audit was challenging for me personally as I had only been in the position as your church administrator for just over two months of the year. Although the audit report was good overall, I learned valuable lessons with document organization that would prove to be instrumental in preparing for the 2009 audit.

At the last Finance Committee meeting, Richard Hill of MEH came to present the 2009 financial audit. He was pleased to report the ease and quickness at which the data gathering portion of the audit was completed. Richard thanked the church support staff for the organized approach to the 2009 financial documentation which resulted in improved audit efficiency and effectiveness. There were no recommendations for changes made. Of course the most important comment was that the financial statements fairly represent the revenue and expenses of Fountain City United Methodist Church for the year ending December 31, 2009.

Already the Dogwood trees are tinged with color. Early morning fog hangs low and Ragweed pollen is high. Katydids are singing and yellow school buses are running their routes. Cool weather is around the corner, and Bob Spencer is ready to help retirees prepare for it. Bob has spent 40 years in the natural gas industry and can recommend some cost effective energy methods to help with utility bills this winter. A surprise bonus at the meeting will be Bob’s musical talents on display. The meeting begins at 11:00 a.m. with lunch to follow. All retirees are invited. Please call Jean Payne at 688-4165 for your reservation.

Driving by Gresham Middle School this past Saturday morning, I could not help but be impressed by all the children and their parents and grandparents and friends and neighbors and — it appeared — half of Fountain City gathered on the ball field. Knowing that football season is getting underway, I assumed it was some kind of kick-off, literally, for the season. It was good to see a community gathering like this and to know that parents are supporting their children by being there to watch and cheer them on. Cars were parked everywhere and every which way, with some folks walking a pretty good distance (well, maybe a block) to the ball field.

I couldn’t help but wonder if all of these parents will be as supportive as the year goes on with PTA meetings, volunteer opportunities in the classroom, ensuring observance of proper bedtimes and all the other parental responsibilities. We can only hope they will. By the way, it was pouring rain. The kids themselves were getting soaked and the parents were standing on the sidelines with their umbrellas.

All that led me to wonder: “Hmmm. Would we be as willing to worship God as these folks are to support their children? Would we stand in the rain? Would we walk a block – even if it weren’t raining — to the building to worship inside in a climate-controlled environment?” No doubt, many could answer yes; but would there be as many in all of Fountain City who would do that as were standing there Saturday getting soaked?

Before I can say much more about that, I guess I must consider that question for myself. Let me think about it. It probably even needs some prayer. However, if I would stand in the rain for anything else, I hope my answer would be the same for the opportunity to worship God.

As folks come back into town from summer trips to places both near and far, let us unite in our responsibility and opportunity to worship the God who has given us life, who has redeemed us in Jesus Christ and who comforts and guides us day after day through the Holy Spirit. This isn’t just “preacher” talk. It is the truth, the Gospel truth. So may it be that worship at Fountain City United Methodist Church will be a privilege for us rather than a chore. Supporting our children in Sunday school and other faith growth activities is one of the best things we can do for them. Let’s covenant with one another to do that. I hope you will join me in this.

– Jim

Go ahead and judge me, but I’m not going to back down, I’m a planner! No, I don’t take it to the extreme like you see clients on the Dr. Phil show do, but I enjoy being creatively organized. I like to know what needs to get done and all the steps that I need to take to get there. When we were planning to take our mission trip to Nicaragua this summer, several of the team members and I spent months trying to make sure that all of the pieces would fall into place. We filled out a ton of insurance and release forms, ordered medications to treat patients, downloaded Spanish praise songs that the puppets would dance to, and tried to make sure that every little detail was covered. By the time the crayons were packed and the flip-flops were boxed up, we felt like we were finally ready to go!

I had spent the two weeks prior to our trip working out a very detailed itinerary that each of our teams would follow each day. I boarded the plane, the itinerary safely tucked in my backpack and began the incredible mission journey to Nicaragua. Everything was going just as we had planned – until we hit the rain storms of Nicaragua! Prior to our arrival in Nicaragua, the country had experienced heavy amounts of rain which made life difficult for many people. When we arrived in Leon and saw the large amount of flooding with our own eyes, I had a sneaking suspicion that our ministry in Nicaragua would not be going according to anybody’s plan. Boy was I ever right!

The next morning, we loaded the team up for travel to the remote village that was on our itinerary. After traveling for a few moments, we learned that the bridge to that community was washed out. We traveled on to the adjacent community, only to find that the road had been washed out. When we finally arrived at the third community of Quazelguaque, they were not expecting a healthcare team or a Vacation Bible School team but the community readily got the word out and we had a wonderful day of ministry. As we were laughing about our adventures of “plan C” that evening, one of the missionaries told us that “our plan C is always God’s plan A.” That helped us put a great perspective on being flexible for the rest of the week.

With the itinerary almost always changing, we began our journey toward discovering what God wanted to teach us this week. Whether the truck we were riding in got stuck in the mud on the way to church or the supply of cough syrup became dangerously low, our mission team was very quick to roll with the punches and try to see what God was up to next. If there is anything that I take away from the mission experience, it is that I just THINK I have the plan that is best. God is the one who is really moving and active in our daily lives and ready to grace us with new and exciting blessings – if we are only wise enough to look beyond our plan and trust in his. Do me a favor: check out the Nicaragua mission trip blog on the church website. You will see some FCUMC members who are loving people and laughing at all of our new experiences. You may even have the desire to sign up for next year’s trip just so that you won’t miss out on the fun!

— Melissa

Now you may be asking, what is “Time Out”?

It is NOT sending your child away to think about their behavior.

It is NOT a football team trying to decide its next play.

It IS a “Time Out” for women to step away from the busyness of their lives to spend an evening and day with friends. It will be a time of relaxing and having fun and most importantly becoming more aware of the necessity of spending “Time Out” with our Lord in order to be the women he would have us be in whatever season of life we are in.

This event will be held at Eagle Rock Camp in Maryville, Tn. Our speaker for the sessions will be Bebe Gillooly. She is a member at Fairview United Methodist Church in Maryville and Guest Relations director at Eagle Rock.

We hope you will consider taking “Time Out” with us. It should be a wonderful opportunity to get to know one another on a deeper level as well as refreshing us for the days ahead in our journey with the Lord.

Registration will begin Wednesday evening August 25 and continue until Monday, September 20. The cost is $65 which includes lodging, three meals on Saturday and a gift for our speaker. Please make out your checks to FCUMC and write “Women’s Ministry” in the memo field.

If you would like to see the camp, you may check it out at www.eaglerockcamp.com. Contact person: Carol Lytle @ 688-4391 or clytle7725@comcast.net.

It’s just not the same around here – for two reasons. Let me tell you why.
“That’s music to my ears” is a phrase we often use when we hear news that we like. When someone tells you they have washed your car or that you look beautiful/handsome, you might reply, “Thank you. That’s music to my ears.” However, I must confess it was not music to my ears when Andrew Duncan informed us that he was accepting a position with First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. I did not thank him. Nor have I heard anyone else claim to have heard such music or thank him. It is, indeed, with regret and sadness that we accepted his resignation, effective July 31.
I think it can truly be said of Andrew that he never met a musical instrument he didn’t know or like or couldn’t play, from the accordion to the zither. His talents span the wide range of musical repertoire. He has a wonderful and unique ability to work with all age groups and all kinds of pastors. He has been easy to work with, but I did have to use the sr. pastor trump card one time with “Ride on King Jesus.” (Andrew, that’s for your reading enjoyment.)
The joy of all this is that Andrew has eagerly used his talents to help us worship God. He has eagerly responded to the gift of the Holy Spirit in his life, and we have all benefited. We have been led to experience God’s presence in a stronger way through his leadership. The music to God’s ear and throne has, indeed, been music to our ears; and we are grateful. We wish Andrew God’s blessings and strength as he makes this important transition in his life.
We will miss you, Andrew. Even more so will we miss Rachel, Natalie and Matthew. What a blessing you have all been to us!
Nor was it music to my ears when I learned that Marci Villanueva, who has served so faithfully and effectively as our church receptionist for the past year, would be leaving. Marci has begun her employment as an administrative assistant with our Holston Conference office in Alcoa. Her many computer skills will be fully utilized in this role and she will be continuing to serve the ministries of our church as she serves the Conference. So we will continue to benefit from her work.
Her helpfulness in our office has been greatly appreciated. Always one to accept a challenge, she has served above and beyond the call of duty in many ways. We will miss her tremendously in the office and also pray God’s blessings upon her in her new endeavor. We are grateful she will continue to be a part of our congregation!
As we find ourselves almost reeling from these changes, we pray for God’s guidance in finding those who will serve with us in these important ministry areas.
— Jim

P. S. Andrew couldn’t play ping-pong worth a flip!

Nothing But Nets is a grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. For just $10, we can buy a bed net, distribute it to a family, and explain its use. These nets are important because long lasting insecticide-treated bed nets can keep a family safe for up to four years. Nothing But Nets has partnered with the Measles Initiative to deliver the nets to even the most hard-to-reach areas of Africa.
