If you are a recent visitor or guest or attender or new member and want to get to know us better, here’s your opportunity. Beginning Sunday, November 8, we will launch an on-going series of classes for people like yourself who may be new to the church and want to know a little more about who Fountain City United Church is. We hope you will join us for these conversational sessions and that they will help you become a better disciple and a more active part of our ministry here. It will also be a great way to become better acquainted with others, including our staff.

There will be five different sessions, and you can “plug in” anytime you want to. You don’t have to participate in them in any particular order. What you miss on a particular Sunday will be repeated in five weeks. You can finish the sessions in five weeks or five months! The sessions will be these:

How did we get here? A history of the United Methodist church and of Fountain City United Methodist Church.

Who are United Methodists? A look at our doctrine, polity (form of government), Social Creed, etc. A popular question: “How do we get (rid of) our pastors?”

Who Are These People We Keep Reading/ Hearing About? Meet the staff – or at least some of us – and some of our lay leaders.

“Ask It Basket” for the Pastors. Ask them whatever you wish. For example, “Who really is the best Ping-Pong player?”

How do I join and how can I serve? Profession of Faith? Transfer of membership? What does membership mean?

The natural progression would be in the order listed above, but you can “jump in” at any time. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with one of the pastors. The sessions will be held from 9:45—10:40 a.m. during the Sunday school hour in room 136.

As we get closer to the beginning of the school year, calendars start getting full really quickly! Don’t forget to bookmark the music page of our church website for important information.

You can find the general rehearsal schedules of all of the musical ensembles, as well as a listing of who plays and sings when for worship services and other special events. Andrew’s own calendar is tied into the website, so you always have access to the most up-to-date information.

Many of the songs that we learn here are available for listening and review at the Listening Room online.

For those of you on Facebook, there are several Fountain City UMC groups – just email me or Andrew Cooper and we’ll make sure you get connected!

On May 5, the Tuesday Morning Men’s Bible Study group began a new 13-week study entitled, Life of Christ. All men are invited to join this study.

There is no doubt that Jesus has had a profound influence on history. In spite of his great influence, however, there is still a sense of mystery surrounding him. Who was Jesus? What was he like?
Our primary sources of information about Jesus are found in the four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Gospels are Spirit-inspired character sketches of Jesus’ life, teachings, and significance. But the Gospels do not merely present histories of Jesus. The main purpose of the Gospels is to lead readers into a greater understanding of the meaning of Jesus’ life and its implications for their own. Each of us personally has to wrestle with the question “Who is Jesus?” and decide for ourselves.

This men’s group meets every Tuesday morning, 7:00-8:00 a.m., in room 137. Good fellowship, thought-provoking discussion, and lots of coffee and donuts are always present. We hope you will be there, too. Call John Needy at 687-8409 if you have questions.

If you have lost someone close to you, or you know someone who has, then perhaps the help provided through a GriefShare support group can ease the pain and emptiness you or another may be feeling.

GriefShare is a nondenominational seminar series featuring videos of some of the nation’s foremost experts on grief and recovery who discuss grieving in the light of Christian faith. The videos and discussions with other group members who have also experienced the death of a loved one can provide valuable information and support that may help participants through a very difficult time in their lives.

Our church’s next GriefShare group will begin meeting on Sunday, May 17, 3:00-5:00 p.m., in the Susanna Wesley Room. John Needy will facilitate the group. There will be 13 weekly sessions, with the last session scheduled for August 9. There is a $12 charge for the participant’s guide. Childcare will be available if needed. Interested persons should contact the church office (689-5175) to register.

The church is now taking pre-orders for premium quality bags that will be used as gifts for our Sunday morning visitors. These large, environmentally-safe bags cost $2.50 each and are made of 20% post-industrial plastic. They are blue with white lettering. We are inviting members of the congregation to pay for two bags—keeping one and allowing the church to use the other as a gift for a new visitor. Additional purchases for visitors are welcomed.

Did you know we had 230 registered visitors in 2008? We had 170 in 2007. Your gift would be helpful in helping us make our visitors feel welcomed and would be a useful tool in helping them remember us. They will also help us to be better stewards of our environment. Buy one to reach one. To purchase a bag, please call the church office at 689-5175 or email fcumc@fountaincityumc.org.
