After a very relaxing week on the beach at Destin, Florida, I feel compelled to share with you some of the things I learned or was reminded of while my mind was, otherwise, idle. (I know, some will ask how that is different from other times.)
God’s genius was as much at work in creating the oceans (in this case, the Gulf) as it was in creating the mountains. Wherever we go, we see God’s creative powers at work. As much as we enjoyed the beauty of that part of our country, Judy and I were just as moved by the bit of color in the leaves we began to enjoy as we headed north.
While I was away, our church was grieved by the death of four long-time members: Anna Mae Massey, Flo Poore, Louise Tindell and Jessie Eidson. Six members of our church were saddened by other deaths. As I learned of these deaths, I was, of course, saddened for the families and our church. I am, as always, thankful for a church staff that reaches out in love at such times. Melissa and Don responded in their usual compassionate ways, and I am most grateful for them!
It was good to be able to participate in Holy Communion in another church on World Communion Sunday. Being there was a reminder that we don’t have God locked up in our own building, but I did miss being with my church family on that day. I also brought back some ideas regarding hospitality, etc., that we might try here. I wonder how an open (as in no roof) narthex would work for welcoming visitors year round in Knoxville? Some of the other ideas might work better.
Alabama would do well to take some of the money they are paying their head football coach to repair their Interstates. I know, I know. That money comes from different “pots.”
The early riser gets the chocolate glazed doughnuts at the Donut Hole in Destin. I found out several times that if you don’t get there by 8:30 a.m., the chocolate glazed doughnuts are gone! Who wants to get up on vacation and rush to the Donut Hole by 8:30? Well, I finally did – twice! Given the opportunity, I would do it again. It’s worth it.
It is good to be home. Thanks for acting like you missed me when you saw me Sunday. For those of you who said you like my beard (I guess it’s really a goatee), thanks. Please talk Judy into kissing me again.
- Jim
